Consider the following:
1. Till Mahabharata period, i.e, around 3102 B.C., the Gods from Vedic Pantheon were worshiped.
Lord Brahma is the Ruler of of all Worlds. - ब्रह्मा लोकाधिपो यथा (Srimad Ramayana, Bala Kanda). Indra's status was held next to him.
The Who is Who of Kings of Mahabharata Era, except a few, fought and got eliminated in the Mahabharata war. After the Rule of Pandavas that lasted for 36 years, no strong administration, directing the people in general in adhering to Vedic Way of life, in the entire country was in place.
This lead to decadence in Human values and grouping among various petty rulers.
Dominant rulers aided by selfish scholars created new Gods and started creating own groups.
(i) As a result, Vishnu, who was one among 33 Gods, had been elevated to the status of God of Gods.
(ii) Shiva could not found in Vedic Pantheon. The Vedic God Rudra's structure, appearance, status,etc, were altered and named Shiva, and was elevated to the staus of MAHAADEVA.
(iii) No mention can be found about Shakti or Rajarajeswari in Vedic Pantheon. Even Sri Krishna did not mention about her in his Bhagavad Gita.
(iv) The present day prominent God, Ganapati did not find place in Vedic Pantheon.
In order to elevate Vishnu, Shiva, Shakti , naturally the status of Lord Brahma has to be degraded, without which Vishnu, Shiva, Shakti cannot be marketed as God/ of Gods.
So all the Puranas were written inventing stories that show Lord Brahma in bad light and elevate Vishnu, Shiva, Shakti.
----------------------
Now a question arises, whether worshipping the GOD through different shapes creates a divide or COLD war among different sects?
There should not be any division of this sort.
However, if each sect tries
(i) to propagate its own Literature, duly incorporating stories, demeaning the status of other sects' GODS,
(ii) to add as many as people as it can to win the number game
then a real problem starts. That was exactly what happened with the followers of various sects, i.e, Vaishnavism, Shivasm , Shakteism.
Each sect created its own Puranas (and authorship attibuted to Sage Vyasa - to gain popularity) and tried to win over as many people as possible from other sects and tried to establish its own supremacy.
As a result, a COLD war that began at that time and has been continuing even at this time also. What a downfall?
-----------------
In the Vedic period there was no sectarian worship of GODS. Whether a person follower of Vedic of Life or not , That only mattered.
A Great Rishi like Agastya used to appease all prominent GODS of that time. Consider the following description.
------------------------- ---
While roaming in the Dandaka Aranya, Sri Rama, Lakshmana, and Seetha enter the hermitage of Sage Agastya. While going to meet the Sage, they saw the designated places for various Devatas.
(Aranya Kanda 12th Sarga 17 - 21 Slokas)
Sri Rama entered inside the hermitage and saw therein the sanctus of Brahma, Fire-god, Vishnu, Indra, Vivasvat - the Sun-god, Soma - the Moon-god, Bhaga - one among the twelve Suns, and the sanctusms of Kubera, [Wealth-Management-god, are seen and passed by the three of them, sanctums of Dhaata, Vidhaata - Vedic deities created by Brahma to help Svayambhuu Manu, santucm of Vaayu - the Air-god, and also like that the sanctum of great-soloed VaruNa - the Rain-god who also wields noose, and the sanctum of Gayatri - the presiding deity of gnosis, sanctum of Vasus - eight of them, and the sanctum of cobra's king - aadi sheSa, the divine Thousand-headed serpent that bears this globe on its head, and even the sanctum of GaruDa - the Divine Eagle , and the half brother of aadi sheSa, and the sanctum of Kaartikeya - chief of gods army,and the sanctum of Dharma - Dharmaraaja, presiding deity of Virtue-Vice-Time of living beings, in-charge of the hell.
