Ramayana and Mahabharata did mention about brahmAstra, a divine weapon used for mass destruction.
However, it cannot be a NUCLEAR weapon, as commonly believed, as Nuclear weapons leave traces of radiation at the place of their usage.
In Ramayana a mention was made about Indrajit, who used brahmAstra for mass destruction. It eliminated 67 crores of Vanaras on a particular day.

The earth was also covered with flaming weapons fallen around.सप्तषष्टिर्हताः कोट्यो वानराणां तरस्विनाम् |अह्नः पञ्चमशेषेण वल्लभेन स्वयम्भुवः || ६-७४-१२Sixty seven crores of powerful monkeys were struck down by the cherished missile of Brahma, the self-born creator, in the fifth and last period of the day.
If the brahmAstra used by Indrajit was a NUCLEAR WEAPON , then there should have been destruction of his own warriors. That was not the case.

We do not know the science behind those weapons. It is to be remembered that not all warriors possessed such weapons. Only a few warriors were described to be in possession of those weapons, like Indrajit, Sri Rama, etc.
It could appear silly to our generation, as we are accustomed to present day technology.
What was the size of computer when it was first invented? And, what is the size of small laptop, iPod, etc, being used, now?
Unless we know the science and technology of that era, it is quite mysterious. This much I can say.
May be it is based on some Sonic Technology.
