In order to answer this question, we need to answer when did Ramayana and Mahabharata actually occur?
1. If we view them to be occurred/written a few hundred years back, then the question of verifying the evidences that existed at that point of time will come up and had to be answered.
2. If we visualise them to had been occurred thousands of years back, but the stories were transmitted from one generation to another orally, as Vedas were transmitted, then we have to answer the question:
When did they occur?

a) In respect of Mahabharata atleast one evidence has come up in the shape of submerged Dwaraka. If we go by the dating of that submerged Dwaraka, then actual Mahabharata might have occured almost 10,000 years back.
b) No such evidence has come up so far in respect of Ramayana. However, if we co-relate other incidents mentioned in Ramayana then we may get some clue.
The war occurred in Ravana's Lanka, but not in India. Many people think that Ravana's Lanka was present day Sri Lanka. However, it could be Sumatra also, due to many reasons.

If it is Sumatra, then the period at which Sumatra was in Southern direction to India, as the present location of Sumatra is South-East to India, could be the age at which Ramayana had occurred.
So it might have took thousands, perhaps millions of years, for drifting from Southern to South-Eastern direction. The usage of Iron might have prevalent at that remote point of time.
c) Then comes the question of loss of evidences.
If we go through many geological events, like Toba eruption in Sumatra Island and others, we realise that those events eliminated earlier civilisations to a greater extent.
The major constructions/evidences of that age either might have lost due to passage of time or buried deep in earthen layers.
